Text ‘Serendipity’ to 90210

It was about a year and a half ago I remember sitting in a meeting at work with some very bright people talking about important ways that we need to connect to our outside distributors, potential new distributors as well as customers. We looked at what the Generation Y crowd was doing because we knew that Gen Y’s actions were an indicator of where technology was going. The Gen Y crowd does not like phone calls and they don’t like emails. According to expert Jason Dorsey at the Center for Generational Kinetics, they are all about text and quick social messaging as their preferred form of communication.

I remember sitting in the meeting thinking how great it would be to have a keyword (or multiple keywords) and just be able to tell people who wanted more information about us to simply text that keyword to a specific short code (text number) and immediately receive a return text message with whatever information we wanted to provide.

Did you know that text message marketing offers a 95% engagement rate?

I learned that there are a number of text messaging service companies out there. But most of them are very expensive and difficult to use, not to mention the maze of hoops you need to jump through in order to execute an effective SMS marketing system.

You know that feeling you get when you’re looking for something very specific in a store or at home. You know what it is, you’ve seen it before, but you can’t find it. Then you feel like you are getting warmer. You search and search and finally you find it. The satisfaction that you didn’t settle for something else. You waited until you found the exact thing you were looking for.

In the spirit of serendipity, I recently found something that I had been searching for over a year. Email communication is all but gone. Email open rates are now less than 5% and most email communication we receive is SPAM. I knew last year after I wrote my first book that I needed to find an effective text message (SMS) service to help promote the book and my social media consulting services. Last week a friend reached out and shared with me information about something he got involved in. A new text messaging service that enabled him to own his own text message service, he controls the keywords and he can use them for whatever purpose he wants. The second I saw the service I felt like I had uncovered a buried treasure. I’ve been searching for more than a year and now without even looking it was presented to me all wrapped up with a pretty bow.

After extensive research, including hours of conversations with the company owners, it was a no-brainer for me to sign up for iZigg, but what I found out after the fact was even more exciting. Owning my own agency for text messages has a lot of benefits. I control my own text messaging services and when you imagine the possibilities of what you can do with that it is incredible. On top of that I can offer text messaging services at incredibly discounted prices to business contacts that I have which is already part of my social consulting strategy. Plus I have quite a few friends that also have connections with businesses and other people that like to network and sell things and I can give them the opportunity to have their own plug into the company as a business owner. In 20 years I’ve seen a lot of direct selling companies. I’ve been involved in quite a few of them as a rep, as a supplier, and as an executive. This opportunity was so different from anything I’ve seen in the last two decades simply because the technology is advanced, the product is excellent, and if someone wants to they can actually make this a full-time business because the demand for the product and service is so high. I was also taken back that the cost of entry was so low.

I’ve been using the service for about a week now. I set up keywords like ‘magolnick’, ‘domainname’, and ‘serendipity’. I have hundreds of subscribers and I find the system to be incredibly easy, plus as an added bonus I’ve actually made a few hundred dollars without even trying.

I love to share information about special finds like this. I think everyone deserves the opportunity to be part of something that is current, easy and profitable like this.

Again, imagine the possibilities of being able to tell someone just text my name, my company name, my product name or some generic word or phrase to 90210. Then whatever information you want to provide to them gets immediately delivered to their cell phone with an additional link to a mobile formatted webpage that has even more information. Think of the implication for personal sales people, products, and things that have special timing such as offers from restaurants, hotels, vacation packages and more. The opportunities for this type of service are endless and it has been proven that the costs are far below any other type of marketing.

You can tell how excited I am about this platform and system. My personal site is www.izigg.com/magolnick and I’m planning on developing a small team of people that work directly with me to actually build this as a real operating business where we can all earn money and manage our own personal marketing needs.

Like I said before, serendipity!

It’s Google versus Apple… again!

Some of you were surprised to see a brand new service on your dashboard when logging in to Google over the last week.  Looks like the 800-lb gorilla is taking on the 1200-lb elephant. It’s Google versus Apple… again! Google TV versus Apple TV. iPhone versus Android.  South of Sunnyvale versus North of Sunnyvale.

Apple iTunes has been somewhat of an untouchable service… until now.  Last week Google officially rolled out the intro to its new Google Play service incorporating over 450,000 apps, millions of songs and books, and thousands of movies.

“Google Play is a new digital content experience from Google where you can find your favorite music, movies, books, and Android apps and games. It’s your entertainment hub: you can access it from the web or from your Android device or even TV, and all your content is instantly available across all of these devices.”-Google

The new service allows you to sample a song or book for free, view app ratings, reviews, and screenshots, or watch a movie trailer.  Google has also integrated Play into the web using the cloud. According to Google, you can buy a book on your Android phone and read it on the web at play.google.com. Buy a new album on your Android tablet and listen to it on your desktop at work. Rent a movie online and watch it anywhere on your phone.  Essentially, they promote the fact that you can read, listen and watch all your favorite content anywhere you want. No software required and no wires or syncing needed, and the Google Play cloud is free to use.

Google is also stepping up their sharing and social platform with Play by including one-click sharing on books, music, movies, games and apps to your circles on Google+, email, or text message.

From Google:

And with offline reading, it’s never been simpler to dive into your favorite books when you are offline, out of range, or in the air. Start reading on your tablet, continue on the web, and finish that chapter on your phone. You’ll pick up the story just where you left off, always on the right page.
  • Read your books any way you like them on Google Play. Easily switch between day or nighttime mode, view in landscape or portrait, choose your font, text size, line height, and customize to your heart’s content.

  • Watch Google Play movies anywhere — your couch, your friends’ house or in-flight. When you rent a movie with Google Play you can watch it on your phone, tablet or any Web connected PC.
  • I understand how popular Android devices are however my question is, will Google Play take the same path as Google+ and Google Buzz? To me, this one has legs.

According to Google, users can start enjoying their Play experience on the web immediately with the application rolling out globally over the next few weeks/months.

Twitter Is Where It’s @ – # Your Way To Success

Twitter Is Where It’s @ – # Your Way To Success

    By Mike Magolnick | @magolnick | March 21st, 2012

Twitter has been around for a few years now.  Interestingly enough, with more than five hundred million users, I still run into people every day who have no idea what Twitter is, how to use it and why it is important for business.  I can’t tell you how many people have told me, “I don’t know how to twitt, or even why I should care.” Well first of all friend, it’s “tweet.”

So Twitter is known as one of the major social networks.  At its core it is a social network, however the platform runs more like a blog, so Twitter is commonly referred to as a micro-blog.  It’s micro because you can only post 140 characters in any one statement, which is about the equivalent to this sentence.

Twitter is a very important online tool to understand and, from at least a business perspective, it is continuously increasing the gap of importance and relevance for businesses than Facebook.  What I mean by that is, very simply Twitter right now is way more important to businesses than Facebook is.

Social media is about communication and engagement.  As I wrote a few weeks back in my article aboutPinterest, Facebook is more emotional and it requires both parties to accept friendship and communication.  Twitter is not that way at all.  While it has a component of emotion that is due to content, Twitter is a one-sided platform.  You can follow who you want, read what you want and reply/respond when you want.  There is no burden of communication or acceptance required, which is why Twitter has far outpaced the other networks, especially with the Gen Y crowd.

One of the other keys behind Twitter is that it is incredibly mobile.  While all of the popular networks have mobile applications, the core functionality of Twitter allows for users to share quick thoughts, statements, news and other things as it’s happening.  You can have a very small amount of followers, but if you “tag” your post effectively, millions of people can see it and take action if necessary.  Take for example, natural disasters.  An earthquake happens and thousands of people turn to Twitter to share the experience as it happens.  With a simple tag “#earthquake,” millions of people will read that post.  The same is true in business.  To use Twitter effectively, you don’t need thousands of followers.  You simply need to know how to post an effective message using tags. A tag can be anything from a simple word (#pizza) to a common phrase (#30minutesorless).  There is no protocol for tagging, so you can create your own tags for everything.  Just keep in mind that the simpler the tag the better chance it will be searched for.  Location-based businesses can also use tagging to their benefit.  For example, you can promote a special with your city as a tag – “2 for 1 drinks tonight at Mike’s in #Dallas”.  By tagging #Dallas, anyone searching for anything in Dallas will have access to that post, not just the people who follow you, which opens up your message to a potentially huge audience.

Another thing you can do on Twitter is targeting your messages.  I’m not talking about direct messaging, I’m talking about message targeting.  Everyone on Twitter has a Twitter “handle.”  Their username with the “at” symbol before it.  Mine is @magolnick.  If you want to “dirt” a post to someone particular or a specific business, you can Tweet @ someone.  For example, “Awesome time @mikesbarandgrill in #Dallas last Friday.  Join us for 2 for 1 drinks this week.”  Keep in mind that when you Tweet at someone, it needs to be a real account.  Tagging (#) can be done to any topic, subject, location, word, etc. Tweeting @ someone needs to be a real account.

The question I get asked the most is about how I built my Twitter account to more than 225k followers.  There are three ways to effectively build your Twitter followers.  First, post interesting content with effective tags.  When people read your posts, if they are interesting, funny, informative, relevant, they are more likely to follow you and recommend that their friends follow you.  Secondly, by following people with similar interests and engaging in conversations about things you have in common, you will build followers.  Essentially, you follow them, engage them and they should follow you.  Third, and this is how I built my network, connect all of your social media together so that people can find you through FacebookLinkedIn,Google+Empire Avenue, your blog and other social sites.  By making sure that you give people access to your Twitter account everywhere, you will build your followers.  It is a lot easier for someone to click a button and follow you on Twitter than go through the two-way process of friending you on Facebook or connecting though LinkedIn.  That is why it is so important to encourage that action everywhere you can.  By connecting all of your social media accounts, you can still post something to Facebook and have it auto-post to Twitter as well.

Both of my books, ‘The Social Media Symphony‘ and ‘Social What Why How‘ have chapters on using Twitter effectively.  Email me or send me a message and I can forward you some highlights from the books that can help with using Twitter.
